Real World Medical Assisting
By Chrystal Sturdifen, Medical Assistant Graduate
The Medical Assistant training program at Beta Tech gives the student classroom training in ECG/EKG. We learned how to recognize basic and abnormal EKG readings. Also, we learned to operate and clean a 12-lead EKG machine for EKG testing. As part of our training, Ms. Collins, Medical Assisting Instructor arranged for us to actually do ECG/EKG rotation at Chippenham/ Johnston-Willis Hospital. We would go in prior to our 8:30 class to assist and do EKG's.
Being at CJW was a great experience. The opportunity to use my medical assistant skills from the classroom allowed me the chance to use what I learned during the past 10 months. Being a Medical Assistant is not all book work; you need to be understanding, caring to an extent and have a personality that is versatile.
In my endeavor to help patients that can hardly move due to pain makes me want to become a certified medical assistant even more. Then there are the outpatients that are so concerned with their health that you can only imagine how scared they must be. I hope that Beta Tech will continue to offer experiences to keep the students in tune with what is actually going on in the "real medical world."
